Kimberly-Clark is not supplied by Sinar Mas or Asia Pulp and Paper

23 July 2010

An article in today’s Fairfax media’s business sections (Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times) falsely claims that Kimberly-Clark in Australia is supplied by Sinar Mas, an Indonesian pulp and paper supplier. (“High yielding palm oil takes a heavy toll”).

The statement is factually incorrect.

“Kimberly-Clark does NOT purchase pulp or paper raw materials from Sinar Mas either in Australia or elsewhere in Asia because the sustainability of the product is open to question.” said Ross Hearne, General Manager –Corporate Services South Asia.

“This is not a new position for us and I have said this before in other forums. It is a global position of Kimberly-Clark Corporation for all wood and fibre supplies to be accredited to a forest management scheme. The Sydney Morning Herald statement has totally misquoted the recent Greenpeace report which has critically reviewed Sinar Mas and its subsidiary, Asia Pulp and Paper’s current activity.” said Hearne.
