KCC wins global energy reduction award

23 April 2009

Kimberly-Clark has been named a 2009 Energy Star Partner of the Year by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognising our ongoing efforts to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all of our global operations.

Worldwide all of our facilities have set energy conservation goals with estimates showing overall energy efficiency has increased by 3.2 percent in 2008 over 2007, and greenhouse gas emissions have reduced by 2.2 percent. These energy efficiency initiatives have generated annual global cost savings of more than $US80 million compared to our 2005 efficiency levels.

In choosing Kimberly-Clark as an Energy Star Partner of the Year, the US EPA recognised our comprehensive approach to energy management, including rigorous tracking of energy usage at our facilities, the use of more energy efficient equipment and lighting fixtures, programs to raise employees’ awareness of their role in improving energy efficiency, and greater use of renewable energy sources including landfill gas and biomass to power manufacturing sites and offices.

In addition, we have been awarded the following prestigious global commendations:

  • Ranked No. 1 in 2008 among personal products companies in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. The DJSI World rankings are based on the long-term economic, environmental and social performance of leading global companies across 57 industries.
  • Ranked 9th largest green power user among Fortune 500 companies by the US EPA based on its use of renewable energy resources.
  • Awarded Environmental Excellence award for second consecutive year by the US EPA’s SmartWay Transportation Partnership for leadership in conserving energy and reducing greenhouse gases.

Locally, Kimberly-Clark Australia & New Zealand is focussed on continuing to reduce our energy usage across all of our sites as part of our ongoing Sustainability programme.

Each year we report to NSW government Department of Energy and Climate Change and already we have met our 2010 targets decreasing energy consumption by 15% over the past 3 years at our Ingleburn Huggies® and Snugglers® nappy mill.
