Government white paper on CPRS cautiously welcomed

Kimberly-Clark General Manager, Corporate Services, Ross Hearne, has welcomed the Government’s realistic approach in proposing a 5% cut in Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2020.
“The Government has clearly listened to the concerns expressed by us and others in industry in setting the targets and balanced our need with the need for significant action on climate change” said Ross.
Ross commented that “although the assistance level is not yet completely clear due to the number of changes made between the Green Paper in July and the White Paper now, it is clear that Kimberly-Clark’s Family Care business will qualify for transitional assistance to operation in a ‘carbon economy’.
“The impact could vary from minor to moderate on our business. In either case, our business competitiveness will to some extent, be affected compared to international competition that does not face the demand for carbon reduction,” Ross went on.
“Therefore we have some concern at the unconditional nature of the 5% target. Even Garnaut, in his recent report commented that ‘going it alone’ for longer than a few years in Australia is not economically sensible,” finished Ross.
