Many people mistakenly believe that cloth nappies are better for the environment than disposable nappies.

There are many false claims in the media about the polluting effect of disposable nappies and the impact on landfill. Our Environment section discusses these topics and injects some realism in to the debate.

Disposable vs cloth nappies

Fortunately for parents, numerous independent scientific studies have shown that both cloth and disposable nappies have a similar level of impact on the environment.

The main difference? Disposable nappies are healthier for your baby and keep your baby drier – quite simply, they perform better.

Nappies and landfill

There are also unsubstantiated claims about nappies causing a landfill crisis, and/or polluting our environment.

In reality, nappies make up less than 1% of landfill in Australia.

Modern landfill sites are specifically engineered not to pollute. In fact, many closed landfill sites are used for parks, community facilities and buildings.
