Greenhouse & energy reduction
Kimberly-Clark Australia is concerned about the impact of greenhouse gas, and is serious about reducing greenhouse emissions.
Key methods of reducing our greenhouse emissions include:
- managing steam by improving boiler systems to achieve a more efficient use of fossil fuel to produce steam
- improving operating efficiency thereby reducing the number of machine stop–starts, idle times and warm ups
- conducting regular and detailed energy audits. With energy conservation programs, these deliver energy efficiency and environmental gains.
Greenhouse neutral biofuels
At our two pulp and paper mill sites we have a chemical ‘recovery system’ which minimises our greenhouse emissions.
The chemical recovery system takes the waste liquor – a thick syrup extracted from the wood – and burns it to recover bioenergy. This forms a closed cycle of chemical recovery which allows us to reuse chemicals, extract energy and reduce waste.
The system provides 30% of the mills’ energy needs – and is greenhouse neutral.
